Sex and the Country

12 single men and you're done - by susan

I love the Cape; there are very few other places I'd rather live. But when it comes to being single on Cape Cod, my reviews aren't quite so glowing. I think there are like... 12 single guys in my general age range on the entire Cape. I've met and/or dated them all.

Ok... I exaggerate (slightly) but because I "hang" at the same general places; I see the same 12 guys over and over. I suppose there is nothing wrong with any of them (maybe familiarity does breed contempt) but I guess years ago I determined they were not a “match” for me and yet I keep seeing them all over town. (kismet or just a small world?)

I justify not dating them by saying: "See, after all these years they are still single". (yet so am I) But really, the pickin's are slim.

Follow my math here..... we have about 200,000 people on the Cape. So let's say 50% are women... my available pool is now 100,000. However, 51% of that group is married, so now I have 50,000 men left.

According to a recent Gallup poll 20% of Americans say the are gay, so now I have 40,000 available men. About 2% live with a significant other, some percentage are confirmed bachelors (about 10%) and 11% are unemployed (I know I sound picky but having a job is a must for me).

Less than 50% of this remaining group is of "working" age (18-64), so that leaves less then 15,000 single men and, to be honest, I wouldn't date any one under 40, so what am I left with? That group of 12 guys I told you about!

But seriously, if you are single and interested in meeting new people, the key is to get involved in a lot of activities outside of your comfort zone. To help you do that, Marty and I will be writing about a wide variety of singles activities around the Cape. So how do you handle being single on Cape Cod? Oh, don’t forget, those 12 men are still up for grabs. (and more than half are pictured below.)

  2. Oh your friend is so right and those are the exact words I have used many times to describe dating and the Cape. Just this morning I was in Boston and the pickin's there look way way better then down here.

  4. this is hysterical! I am single, 41 yrs old and decided I would love to live on Cape Cod, so I did a little search. I am disheartened that there are only 12 single guys out there! LOL! They would be new to me though, so that could be a bonus!

  6. nice article but the numbers are arbitrary and not based on actual census data. I'm sure if you actually looked up the ratio of men to women it would be more like 70-30 male heavy or even 80-20. Can't argue with the statement that most of them aren't prizes though lol. Places like south florida, where the ratio is drastically in favor of men, are rife wife plastic surgery, bleach blonde hair and Mtv video like women. Around here most women look like Tom Petty. That should tell you something about competition levels for women around here. My recommendation is to find different places to hang out and don't look for guys at bars unless you're looking for weekend warrior college guys who just want to get laid or drunken fisherman who just want someone else to clean their underwear lol. Good luck!

  7. Actually Matt, when I wrote that in 2009 I used the most recent census figures available for Cape Cod. That being said, the piece was written in humor - something that is in short supply and would be a serious requirement for me if I was looking for a significant other. Thanks for your recommendations but I’m doing fine without them. Just to put your mind at rest I’m not now nor have I ever looked for a date in a bar.

And just as a FYI, not one of my girlfriends looks like Tom Petty. Perhaps you need to hang in some new places?
